On the run:
The most infamous of drug kingpins on the run is Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, whose nickname translates as "Shorty." He has defied all odds by breaking out of a Mexican prison nearly a decade ago and taking his Sinaloa Cartel to the top of Mexico's organized crime world. He is singularly the most wanted man in Mexico and rubbed salt in President Felipe Calderon's wounds in 2009 by landing on Forbes magazine's list of billionaires. He is wanted in the U.S. on drug trafficking and conspiracy charges, and the government is offering a reward of up to $5 million for his capture.

The man is an Oscar winner, a respected artist who lends his talents to various causes and a native Texan who calls San Antonio home. We love his don’t-mess-with-me vibe that demands respect — or maybe it’s fear. Whatever it is, don’t we all wish we could make things happen with a steely-eyed glare?

For most of its existence as an inexpensive motel north of downtown, the Alamo Lodge has been practically invisible to most people - but not to the police officers and paramedics who have responded to hundreds of calls at the property. In the past four years, police have been called to the motel, on average, just about every day. In late July, the city attorney's office went to court in an effort to declare the property at 1126 E. Elmira St. near downtown a public nuisance and close it down for a year to force the owners to clean up the motel. "This property has generated over 1,200 calls for police service" since Jan. 1, 2006, the city's lawsuit says.
