By Jerry Briggs - Express-News

A reception will be held at Willis Library at the University of North Texas in Denton today to honor the life achievements of Victor Rodriguez, the former superintendent of the San Antonio Independent School District.

A spokeswoman said that Rodriguez has donated his papers to the library and that they will be on display in an exhibit through May 14. Rodriguez ran track at the school, then known as North Texas State, in the 1950s.

He was the first Hispanic scholarship athlete and the first Hispanic letterman in North Texas history. He was inducted into the UNT Hall of Fame in 2006.

I still remember, when he used to make us clean our area in the Art Class. He would always remind us he had to run to school and that running gave him a scholarship and many students from Lanier followed his plan to run and get a free education as he did. I am glad he's being Honored because he sure does deserves it.

Mr. Rodriguez treated all individuals with respect and in dignified manner. We sure need this type of person in charge of schools around here and other places in the United States. God bless Victor Rodriguez
