Produced by Smithsonian Folkways, the reverential 16-song collection of traditional conjunto songs was recorded in San Antonio at Blue Cat Studio.
“Oh, my God. We did it,” said bandleader and bajo sexto star Max Baca about the longshot win. His partner, accordionist David Farias, was equally floored to win in a category that included more commercial efforts from Stefani Montiel, Jay Perez, Sunny Sauceda and Joe Posada.
“Oh, man. This feels good,” Farias said. “This time it's a different feeling. We did it on our own.”
Both Baca and Farias have appeared on Grammy winning projects, but this was a first win for LosTexManiacs, a Tex-Mex act. Sharing in the win are bassist Oscar Garcia and drummer Lorenzo Martinez.
“This one's really special,” said producer Joe Treviño, owner of Blue Cat Studios. “There was no other record like it. I'm really happy for Max.”
