The Show: Comedy superstar George Lopez at the AT&T Center on Saturday for a live HBO special — “George Lopez: Tall Dark & Chicano.” Modern-day Dick Van Dyke-style comic Bryan Kellen opened.
Attendance: More than 14,000.
First take: Let the politicians waffle. Just don't expect this irrepressible and defiant Brown Power standup comedian to pussyfoot around. George Lopez's triumphant return to San Antonio topped what he called a pretty good week for Latinos, with the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court and the “cash for clunkers” program. He chastised Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, for voting against Sotomayor. "You won't win apinche pie-eating contest without the Latino vote," Lopez warned.
“El Mas Chingon”: Lopez's rudely titled 2006 comedy album sums it up perfectly. The 48-year-old comedian pulled rock star, Jonas Brothers-type attendance numbers yet again. He's now made three concert appearances at the AT&T Center over the years and drawn more than 45,000 people. Add in those not-so-long-ago sold-out shows at Majestic Theatre and Rivercenter Comedy Club, and you've got a fair-sized city. Let's see if Kevin, Joe and Nick ever top that.
