Gallista Gallery and Luz de Luna BotanicArte presents “Al Aire Libre!” It is an open-air market and Dia de Los Muertos workshops for the community.

The workshop includes everything you need to build your own altar. If you haven't done this before, Gallista will be running workshops inside Gallista Gallery.

The event is from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Gallista Gallery, 1913 S. Flores St.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is on Nov. 1. It is when the Higher Spirit allows antepasados (ancestors) to join in taking in the essence of the beauty, food and libations provided by their family and friends.

La Marketa de Muertos will allow you to build an altar for Dia de los Muertos to reconnect, continue, and extend their cultural raices (roots) their families.

The Marketa will provide you with the offerings* that are difficult to obtain in the U.S. during this celebration. This event will allow them to view and obtain all the elements significant to their altar.

Gallista Gallery has extended invitations to artists and artisans to sell their work. They have also invited vendors to sell sempasuchitl (marigolds), calaveritas (skeletons), caña (sugar cane) and other items traditionally placed on an altar.

If you like to actually make the offerings for your ancestors, the Gallista Gallery will hold workshops to show you how to make an ofrenda (offering), cut papel picado (cut-out paper), and make calaveritas de azucar (sugar skulls).

They will also offer recipes for traditional foods for the celebration, including champurrado (a chocolate drink thickened with cornmeal,) ponche de fruta (hot fruit punch,) and mole (chicken dish).
