George Lopez has entertained us through his television, stage and film work.
The pioneering comic – his ABC sitcom was among the few to showcase Latinos – will make San Antonio's AT&T Center his stage for his live HBO special “Tall, Dark and Chicano” on Aug. 8.
In recognition of Lopez choosing the Alamo City as the site for the taping of his latest comedy special, we've counted down our top GLo moments. Here's why we think Lopez truly is El Más Chingón (cue “Low Rider” song):
When the “George Lopez” show premiered on ABC in 2002, it made Lopez only the fourth Latino to helm a sitcom. The show, executive produced by actress Sandra Bullock, depicted a middle-class Latino family, something rarely seen on mainstream television before or since.
After Lopez underwent kidney transplant surgery in 2005, he brought attention to kidney disease by working it into a storyline on his sitcom and by promoting organ donation awareness on his Web site.
Lopez fulfilled a childhood dream in 2006 when he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The feat provided him with an inspirational message and plenty of I-showed-you material to use in his stand-up act.
When Eva Longoria Parker played a bridezilla in a 2006 episode of “George Lopez,” she brought out one of the comic's best performances. We loved seeing a harried Lopez trying to plan the perfect wedding for Longoria Parker's character. It made us wonder: how much of this played out in real life the following year?
During his 2007 “America's Mexican” HBO comedy special, Lopez called out Estrada for being a jerk to young fans back in the actor's “CHiPs” heyday. Lopez didn't mince words, infamously using a profane term to describe his feelings toward Estrada.
Lopez wasn't shy about criticizing ABC for canceling his sitcom in 2007 and replacing it with a commercial-based comedy about cavemen. “So a Chicano can't be on TV, but a caveman can?,” he told the Los Angeles Times. ‘Cavemen' failed to make an impression, lasting 13 episodes.
Our other favorite GLo moment is yet to come. When his late night talk show “Lopez Tonight” premieres this November on TBS, we'll be watching.
