The show: Ranchera king Vicente Fernández at the AT&T Center on Saturday. Shaila Dúrcal opened.

The audience: If you weren't wearing boots or a cowboy hat, you were out of place in the arena's crowded concourse.

First take: El Rey de las Rancheras was definitely in the building. The 69-year-old Fernández kicked off his set with "Jalisco," following Dúrcal onstage without interruption. The bare-bones stage setup was the only background needed for the ranchera powerhouse. The Jalisco, Mexico, native kept the crowd happy with fan favorites "Por Tu Maldito Amor," "Lástima Que Seas Ajena" and "Que Te Vaya Bonito."

For openers: Spanish ranchera singer Dúrcal opened the night with the help of Mariachi Azteca de David del Toro. The daughter of the late singer Rocio Dúrcal, she is really coming into her own, as evidenced by the crowd's reaction to her cover of "Se Me Olvido Otra Vez." The 2009 Latin Grammy-nominated singer got the audience revved up for Fernández with songs from her latest album, "Corazón Ranchero."
