GCAC seeks conjunto submissions
The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is seeking literature submissions on conjunto music for possible inclusion in a special edition of the 29th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio program magazine.
Submissions may include scholarly articles, short stories, poetry, essays, interviews with conjunto artists, or any other written work on the subject of conjunto music. Submissions are being accepted through March 1. Entrants whose works are accepted into the publication will be notified.
Submissions should be e-mailed as an attachment to Juan Tejeda, director of this year’s festival and editor of the special magazine edition, at juantejeda@sbcglobal.net. For more information, call (210) 271-3151.
The 29th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival takes place May 11–15 at the Guadalupe Theater and Rosedale Park.
Historic smokestacks ‘Go Red’
The historic smokestacks at the Alamo Quarry Market ‘Go Red’ for the month of February in support of the ‘Go Red for Women’ partnership with the American Heart Association, Alamo Quarry Market officials recently announced in a press release.
The smoke stacks have been illuminated at night with red lights since Feb. 1.
The American Heart Association’s ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign seeks to educate the public that heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. According to the American Heart Association, Hispanic women are more likely to develop heart disease 10 years earlier than Caucasian women.
Supporters of the efforts to raise awareness about the effects of heart disease in women are encouraged to participate in National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 5, by wearing articles of red clothing.

Donation made to Hispanic Chamber
San Antonio business leader Max Navarro, founder of Operational Technologies Corporation (OpTech), presented the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SAHCC) with a $50,000 gift on behalf of OpTech and its other founding partners, Dr. Wayne Shore and Dr. Lynda de la Viña, at the Hispanic Chamber’s 81st Annual Gala held on Jan. 29.
The gift will be used to help SAHCC begin a small business program that will provide small business owners with the resources they need to succeed, according to a news release issued by SAHCC.
OpTech, a SAHCC member, was founded in 1986 as the first San Antonio Hispanic-based scientific research firm. It has evolved to specialize in biotechnology, innovative research, international supply chain services and the automotive industry.
Hispanic College Fund taking applications
Hispanic students in need of financial assistance could be eligible for thousands of dollars in scholarships.
Applications for the Hispanic College Fund’s 2010-2011 scholarship season are being accepted through Feb. 16. Scholarships will be awarded to 500 students across the country. Scholarships range in amount from $500 to $10,000 and may be used to cover tuition, academic fees and other expenses.
All scholarship applications must be submitted online to the Hispanic College Fund at hispanicfund.org. Students are encouraged to submit their applications in advance of the Feb. 16 deadline to ensure that all supplemental materials are received in a timely manner.
To qualify, undergraduate and graduate students must maintain a 3.0 out of 4.0 GPA; be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident residing in the United States or Puerto Rico; be enrolled full-time at an accredited university for the 2010-2011 school year; and must demonstrate financial need.
SAY Sí holds annual fundraiser, preview event
SAY Sí, the national award-winning multidisciplinary arts program, hosts a preview of its 13th annual ‘Small Scale Work for a Larger Cause’ fundraising event.
The free preview event takes place 6-9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 5, at SAY Sí Central, 1518 S. Alamo St. The exhibit, featuring more than 200 small-scale art pieces by some of San Antonio’s premier visual artists, will be on display at no cost through Feb. 25.
The free preview event and month-long display culminate with a Feb. 26 benefit, SAY Sí’s 13th Annual Small Scale Work for a Larger Cause from 6:30-9 p.m. at SAY Sí Central.
Tickets for the event are $40 in advance; $50 at the door.
